The Board is proposing to update and amend the "Guidelines for Good Practice of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies" replacing them with "Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics in the Practice of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies". A draft copy of the "Standards" has been circulated to all members for consultation and the final draft for confirmation by the AGM is available here.

6. Resolution to amend the Articles of Association of BABCP

The Board is proposing to introduce a new class of membership, that of "Fellow". There will also be a slight modification to the existing procedure for electing "Honorary Fellows". These proposals will require changes to Articles 2 and 4 and an additional Article in respect of the section on "Members". The full resolution is available here.

BABCP: BABCP Announce Revised Guidelines and Standards

New "Guidelines for Good Practice of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy"

All members of BABCP are required to adhere to the "guidelines for good practice of behavioural and cognitive psychotherapy" but after 35 years, these are about to change.

The original "Guidelines" were drawn up in 1974 by a small BABP (cognitions weren't thought about then!) working group in response to a government enquiry into abuse at a mental health hospital, allegedly from behaviour modification techniques employed. BABP offered evidence to the enquiry in the form of what we considered to be the standards expected of our members using behavioural psychotherapy.

These then became the "Guidelines for Good Practice" and the existing 350 members of BABP were required to sign that they accepted them and would endeavour to adhere to them. All subsequent members joining BAB(C)P have been required to do the same as a criterion for membership. There was a philosophical discussion at the time that the guidelines could not be called "ethics" so they never became an ethical code. Reference has always been made in the guidelines to most members additionally being bound by a code of practice of their core profession so detailed statements of general ethical and legal principles were not included in the guidelines.

Only minor changes have been made to the guidelines over the years to accommodate such issues as "cognitive" being introduced, accreditation commencing and changing views on political correctness. However, in recent years there have been increasing numbers of BABCP members who have not been bound by a code of ethics of a professional body and it is felt that our guidelines are inadequate as a stand alone document. The BABCP Board therefore decided in 2007 to update our "Guidelines" to make them more comprehensive for those members. Coincidentally, the Health Professions Council (HPC) had recently revised their code of ethics for registrants, calling it "Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics". The Board considered that BABCP should base its revised guidelines on the HPC Standards and give it a similar title. This will be particularly useful when psychotherapy becomes regulated by HPC and BABCP members requiring to register with HPC as psychotherapists will already be bound by similar standards.

In adapting the HPC standards, we have used all fourteen ‘duties' they list but enhanced some of them regarding issues such as confidentiality, consent, advertising and clinical supervision. We have also added a fifteenth section (section 2) which deals with issues specific to CBT such as assessment, formulation, measurement and procedures all of which are largely taken from our existing "Guidelines". The new BABCP standards document has gone through six drafts to its present form having been considered by a working group and then bounced to and fro between the National Committees Forum (NCF) and the Board of Trustees and finally sent to the whole membership for consultation before this final document is presented to the AGM in Exeter on 16th July for confirmation.

The Research Fund Appeal

Applications are now invited from BABCP members for the Association's annual research grant. This year we are pleased to
announce that the Grant has been increased to £16,000, entries must be received by the end of July 2009.

A three-month long peer review process will then take place with the successful applicant due to be announced in November.
This is the third time the grant will have been awarded. Craig Steel said "This grant is specifically aimed at facilitating research ideas from practicing CBT therapists who have an eye on directly improving clinical outcome. We welcome applications which aim to develop novel CBT interventions. We exclude applications from individuals who have previously been awarded a major grant because we want to encourage applications from a wide range of clinicians. We are interested in the value of the clinical idea, and will be quite accommodating to the fact that individuals may not have written a research application before".

Past award winners have included Polly Waite for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Low Self-esteem: a preliminary randomised controlled trial in a primary care setting, and Jennifer Wild for Evaluating Training in CBT.

BABCP is welcoming members of the public from the South West to learn more about CBT at a FREE open meeting on Wednesday, 15 July 2009 at the University of Exeter. A flyer is available for download here

A proven form of psychotherapy for anxiety and depression problems, CBT also has a growing role in the treatment of long-term medical conditions. From the alleviation of low mood and excessive worry, to cancer care and chronic pain, from soldiers returning from conflict zones to survivors of terrorist bombings, CBT has been shown to be effective in enabling people to reclaim and sustain their quality of life.

Taking the form of an ‘open meeting', this event consists of short presentations from leading practitioners, academics and service users involved in CBT. This is then followed by a question and answer session.

This year's open meeting - called What CBT does - recognises the important role of behavioural and cognitive approaches in an ever-widening range of medical settings. Any member of the public with an interest in CBT is encouraged to participate in this event, alongside health commissioners, service providers and users, and representatives from public, private and voluntary sector organisations.

Dr Paul Farrand, of the University of Exeter, says: "Bringing the public together with professionals and service users is a good way to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. We also want to highlight the innovations that are taking place in CBT and how it is being increasingly applied across a greater number of areas. One of the areas we will look at this year is what CBT does to improve the quality of life for those with long-term medical problems. "

Accreditation as Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist

Only members of BABCP can apply to become Accredited as Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapists. They will need to meet the Criteria for Accreditation which are available below.

Once Accredited, members are listed in the BABCP Directory of Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapists which is published on the website and is available to the public, BABCP members and other professionals seeking a CBT Psychotherapist. Applicants must work, or intend to work, in the UK or Ireland.

Criteria for Accreditation as a Cognitive and/or Behavioural Psychotherapist

New Guidelines for Accreditation: please ensure that you read the new criteria and guidelines before applying.

All applications for accreditation as a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist are now ‘provisional' in the sense that accreditation is granted for only one year in the first instance. This means that the entry criteria and Minimum Training Standards have been met. Full accreditation is dependent on submission (12 months after date of provisional accreditation) of an application for ‘full accreditation' - along with specialist CBT Supervision and CBT CPD logs - and current Supervisor report.
Effectively, there is no difference in status implied between ‘provisional' and ‘full' accreditation. The overall process, however, is not complete until an application for full accreditation has been made - supported by the additional required evidence as stated above

When completing your Log Books please bear in mind the following :

Criterion 5 (Accreditation) and Criterion 3 (Re-accreditation) requires that you - show evidence of sustained commitment to the theory and practice of Behavioural and/or Cognitive Psychotherapy which includes Continuing Professional Development

Please ensure therefore that you

ATTEND WORKSHOPS AND COURSES FOR YOUR OWN BENEFIT NOT JUST AS A LECTURER/TEACHER.

The committee look for a balance of attendance at symposia/lectures/ conferences/seminars, and skills based workshops/courses, as well as provision of any of these, for a minimum of 30 hours per year. You additionally need to show reading of relevant CBT books and journals and any publications in CBT.

Attendance at ‘management meetings' or providing supervision or carrying out your normal day to day clinical work are not counted as your own continued professional development in Behavioural and/or Cognitive Psychotherapy.

Whilst a balance of the above is required, you do not necessarily have to have PROVIDED training/lectures, publication or research.

Criteria for Re-Accreditation as a Cognitive and/or Behavioural Psychotherapist

To be re accredited applicants must fulfil the following five criteria:-

1) Continue to be professionally registered and accountable within a core profession - or provide a satisfactory explanation for no longer being registered within a core profession.

BABCP: Supervisor and Trainer Accreditation

INTRODUCTION

Accreditation as a CBT supervisor and/or CBT trainer is now available.

Applicants must fulfil the following criteria:

Be receiving regular clinical supervision from an expert/dedicated CBT supervisor and appropriate supervision/support for their CBT supervisory and/or training practice.
Be accredited or eligible for accreditation with BABCP as a CBT practitioner.
Demonstrate a minimum of 3 years CBT practice since achieving eligibility for clinical practitioner accreditation.
Show evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development in skills and theory in CBT which includes professional development as a supervisor and/or trainer in CBT.
Be a dedicated CBT practitioner.
Be providing regular specialist CBT supervision and/or training.
Have treated a significant number of clients using CBT, under regular CBT supervision, from a spectrum of complexity and problem areas. See accompanying guidelines (below).

You need either, to have been Accredited with BABCP as a clinical practitioner for at least three years, or if you are currently not Accredited, to show that you met the criteria at least three years ago.

Step 2 Fill in the application form, in conjunction with the guidelines for applicants, and ensure that you include the following supporting evidence:

Copies of attendance certificates for your Continuing Professional Development in CBT supervision and/or training.
Evaluation of your provision of CBT supervision and/or training, e.g. evaluation of supervision, feedback sheets on teaching, peer observation of teaching.

Step 3 Ensure you provide a typewritten summary of your CBT clinical experience (see page 4 of application form).

Step 4 Obtain completed Supervisee's feedback forms from at least two current or recent supervisees (if applying for supervisor accreditation).

Step 5 Identify a referee for your CBT supervisory and/or training practice and ask him/her to complete the Reference form.

Step 6 Send two copies of all completed forms, two copies of supporting evidence, and the necessary payment to BABCP, Victoria Buildings, 9 -13 Silver Street, BURY, BL9 0EU.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I be accredited as just a CBT supervisor (but not a trainer)?

Yes.

Can I be accredited as just a CBT trainer (but not a supervisor)?

Yes.

Do I need to be accredited as a CBT practitioner in order to apply for accreditation as a supervisor/trainer?

If you are not currently accredited with BABCP as a CBT practitioner, you will need to apply for this type of accreditation at the same time as you apply for supervisor/trainer accreditation. The necessary documents are downloadable (see ‘Guide to Applying') There is an additional £40 fee for this.

I have been Practitioner Accredited for less than 3 years can I still apply for Supervisor or Trainer Accreditation

If you have been Practitioner Accredited for less than 3 years you will need to wait until the 3 year period has been achieved

Which documents do I need to complete?

All applicants must complete the Application form and the Reference (as a Supervisor/Trainer). In addition, if you are applying for Supervisor Accreditation you must submit at least two examples of completed Supervisee's feedback forms. If you are also applying for Practitioner Accreditation, you must submit a Practitioner Application form and two Practitioner Reference forms.

What evidence do I need?

You need to supply evidence of CPD relevant to CBT supervision and/or training. You also need to provide quantitative and qualitative evidence regarding some of the supervision and/or training you have given. If applying for practitioner accreditation, we require evidence of qualifications and all CBT CPD over the past three years.

What counts as evidence?

Certificates of attendance. Written feedback from the recipients on the quality of CBT supervision/training and CBT teaching timetables also count.

What counts as CBT clinical supervision?

Individual or group settings. Recipients can be at introductory, intermediate or advanced levels or on training courses. The key factor is whether the supervision was primarily CBT in orientation.

What counts as CBT training?

Any formal CBT teaching, whether theoretical or practical. Again, it does not matter who receives it, as long as its focus is principally CBT.

How many hours supervision/training do I need to do?

The minimum requirement for accreditation as a CBT supervisor is the provision of 80 hours supervision over the past two years. For accreditation as a CBT trainer, it is a minimum of 40 hours over the past two years.

How much will it cost?

The fee for the initial application is £80 If you are not already Accredited as a practitioner, the fee for submitting the application at the same time is £40 (rather than £80). If successful, there is an annual administration fee of £25. A BABCP website listing costs a further £75. (Fees correct at 20th June 2008: Check current fees before applying.)

How long will it take to process my application?

It should take no longer than three months. If there are any queries or concerns you will be contacted directly. This may slow the process.

Can my accreditation as a CBT supervisor/trainer be listed on the BABCP website?

This will be available soon.

When do I have to seek re-accreditation?

As with practitioner accreditation, you will need to apply for re-accreditation after five years. During this period you will need to continue to meet the necessary criteria for accreditation, e.g. for CPD.

What happens if my application is unsuccessful?

It will be made clear how you can rectify this, prior to re-applying. You can avoid the need for this by carefully examining the criteria before applying (see ‘Guidelines for Applying')

There has been lots of correspondence on the BABCP Jiscmail over the last 12 months about ‘Agenda for Change'. The Board of BABCP have taken the view that as a special interest group and a charity BABCP is only allowed to promote the activity of CBT. Therefore BABCP does not have the remit to represent people in the A4C process, or advise on job descriptions. This view was confirmed by a Charity Commission visit to the association in October 2005. The view of the Board of BABCP, however, is that if individuals within the association wish to support one another then this would be supported. Thus this document will be posted on the jiscmail.

BABCP are very supportive of competent practice and would point people in the direction of the BABCP website (www.babcp.com) where there is lots of material about the nature of CBT, the minimum training standards, and the accreditation criteria. This information is in the public arena and may be helpful to individuals going through A4C.

The aim of this document and disclaimer:

The people contributing to the jiscmail have had very varied experiences and offered all sorts of advice to others. I have simply collated the experiences and advice given by members of BABCP through this forum. I do not accept any responsibility for the
suggestions collated here. Through the jiscmail people have shared their experiences and written about what they have found useful in their own personal circumstances. As each person's circumstances are different it is unlikely that the suggestions below will be helpful to everyone. I am not an expert in A4C, therefore in collating this advice I have just written it down as it is, therefore some of the advice may contradict other pieces of advice. I am not advocating that CBT therapists (from whichever professional background) should be on any particular band. I do not endorse any of the advice or suggestions directly. I do not accept any responsibility for the suggestions collated here, people can make of them what they will, but how they use the advice/suggestions is their own responsibility. The sections in speech marks I have copied directly from jiscmail texts, I may have summarised other bits, but I cannot remember which now.

The A4C process (as far as I can tell):

What I have gleaned about the process (from the jiscmail) and the problems people are
experiencing (in bold):

1.          You agree a JD with your line manager. People are encountering problems here i.e. they do not agree with their job description.
2.         That JD is then used by a job matching panel to place your job, not you, in a band.
3.         JDs are matched against national profiles, so what the job the matching panel has to do is to find the one that most closely matches your job both in terms of the factor levels and the job title. People are encountering problems here as there are no national profiles for CB Psychotherapists, or CBT nurse therapists etc.
4.         When you appeal against your banding you can either complete a Job Analysis Questionnaire, or the panel will rematch it.
5.         You can resubmit your job description & person specification although there is a debate about whether you would then get a backdate (for pay purposes) if this was accepted.
6.         I am not sure if there is any further recourse to appeal.

People's experience of A4C matching panel problems:

· "the frankly arbitrary nature of the way in which A4C is being applied by different managers and matching panels, with some bending over backwards to help staff achieve the highest possible band while others seem to see this as an opportunity to save on budgets and to effectively ignore the extended role that some practitioners have taken on".

· "Matching panels' lack of knowledge re CBT, it is difficult for non CB Therapists to understand what a CB Therapist does and how much knowledge, skill and experience the job requires".

· "If your personal spec does not specify a certain level of qualifications and/or experience (either in desirable or essential) the job matching panel may be unable to match your job to certain national profiles and may have to match to something on a lower band".

· "Some people have been asked to write their job descriptions on the basis of what would be expected of someone new being recruited to the post. This makes sense for HR departments for recruiting, so that able people without the academic background can be recruited and gain skills and academic qualifications within specialist departments. However it is advisable for matching panels to speak to the line manager to identify what level of knowledge & skill the post holder will
require to carry out the full functions of the post. In most circumstances this will be very different from the line set to recruit".

Advice from BABCP members about what to do if you are not happy with your Job title
and/ or job description:

· "Make sure how much knowledge, skill and experience the job requires is clearly reflected in the job description and person specification".

· "Make sure your person spec specifies the level of qualifications and/or experience (either in desirable or essential)"

· "The job description and personal spec are the key. If they don't reflect what you need to do the job, make sure that they are reviewed before you accept them".

· "If you are not happy with your job description or person spec you can ask for mediation your job description cannot be unilaterally imposed".

· "Look at your job title and the appropriate national profile and if you are unhappy with this and do not believe the job profile matches what you are doing you need to think about whether your job has the correct title".

· "Get hold of the job matching handbook and see if the wording in your JD is explicit enough in terms of the factors described in the handbook".

· "What is in your personal spec is also important in particular with regard to qualifications and experience. If your personal spec does not specify a certain level of qualifications and/or experience (either in desirable or essential) the job matching panel may be unable to match your job to certain national profiles and may have to match to something on a lower band".

· "Consider dropping the word "nurse" out of our title as the criteria for the Nurse Advanced profile look more onerous than Counsellor Specialist when both are on band 7. If you look at Clinical Psychologist Principal (band 8a8b) it talks of "straightforward activities" as opposed to "complex" ones under Nurse Advanced".

· "Do not underestimated the importance of the person specification, particularly as Factor 2 Knowledge, Skills & Experience holds the most weight. You have to demonstrate that the requirements needed to do your job in this area (e.g. acquire & maintain BABCP accreditation) amount to more than a diploma and are more equivalent to masters level training".

· "When writing your job description pay particular attention to the considerations of a highly specialist nurse and pinpointing and reflecting the complexity in your work. Also flag up the consultancy aspect of the role and the supervisory capacity that it fulfils in essence the components that made up the specialist practitioner award with the old ENB 650. Autonomy and selfdirection play quite a part".

· "For the person spec emphasis the level of training and qualification required to fill the post i.e. to differentiate between say CBT courses which some people have done at introductory level or as part of inhouse training etc. This gives quite a difference between CBT therapists and e.g. some staff who have developed skills in this area".

· "you should be able to honestly up your points (if on Band 6, very easily without having responsibility for teams, whatever) on sections when going through the nhs job evaluation handbook 2nd edn (ref 404390)"

· "It is VITAL that Factor 2 is matched to the correct profile to take into account that we are working at masters level (or above in some cases) to do our job (even though our recruited level may be degree). If there were no questions asked of you or your manager along these lines you may be in a position to appeal, also check the profile that you were matched against".

· "We've decided to drop "nurse" out of our title so as to make sure a review panel compare us with psychotherapist/ psychologist profiles".

· "Be clear about how much training/experience is required on top of your core professional training......... as you will be matched according to Page 4 of 5 whether this is seen as equivalent to Diploma, Masters or Doctorate level qualifications"

· "emphasise that CPD postaccreditation (ie 30 hours per year & ongoing supervision) is about continuing to develop your Knowledge, Skills & Experience to be able to work better & better with such problems"

· "where does putting your hands down a toilet and then eating sandwiches come in? ........the ability to collaboratively devise and carry out behavioural experiments in a way that targets and undermines key cognitions is a skill requiring high levels of clinical sophistication, not least the interpersonal and engagement skills required".

· "It is important to remember also that the banding is related to all aspects of the postholder's job not just that related to therapeutic model and therapeutic work"

Advice for appeals:

· "When making an appeal you can ask for specialist witnesses to help make your case"

· "When we submit extra information to the panel I will be mindful of how supervision may be perceived. I think we forget that not everyone sees supervision as an essential part of good practice"

BABCP: CBT Training Courses

Important information about the courses listed

This is a listing of courses known to substantially contribute to meeting the Minimum Training Standards or having been Accredited by BABCP as meeting those standards.

The courses not Accredited are on the list because they are known to have been used by applicants for Practitioner fAccreditation as contributing to their evidence of specialist CBT training - and are therefore familiar to the Accreditor Panel.

However, this does not denote that they have been formally assessed and BABCP is not able to give an opinion on the quality or quantity of training provided by such courses

Courses which have been through the formal BABCP Course Accreditation process will have been matched and evaluated for quality and content against the requirements for individual practitioner accreditation as laid down in the Minimum Training Standards.

If the course has been formally evaluated at Level 2, this denotes that all the requirements are covered. If the course has been formally evaluated at Level 1, this denotes that some requirements are met - anfd a specific quantification of this will be provided in course literature.

Applicants for Practitioner Accreditation can only be deemed to have completed an Accredited Course if they commenced that course AFTER the date it was Accredited. This is because we have found in all courses so far applying for accreditation, there has been a need for some changes to be able to meet the course accreditation criteria. Applicants who have completed a course prior to its Accreditation may still, of course, use it as evidence for their specialised CBT training but it will not be automatically accepted in the same way as an Accredited course.
