Branch Report:

FOLLOWING IN SHEILA'S FOOTSTEPS:

TAKING CBT INTO THE 21ST CENTURY  ONE DAY CONFERENCE AT BANGOR UNIVERSITY

The NWW BABCP Branch had the pleasure of organising a one day conference hosted by Bangor University in memory of Sheila Jenkins (ASW) who was one of the pioneers of CBT in North Wales.

She also spearheaded the development of mental health services in the area.

The conference was very well attended including Hywel Williams MP, mental health professionals and people who knew Sheila.

We had a very distinguished panel of speakers including:

  • Prof. Chris Cullen, who gave a very informative and entertaining talk on ACT;
  • Prof. David Richards from the University of York talked about an alternative "prescription" for the high prevalence of mental health disorders;
  • Prof. Judy Hutchings of Bangor University talked about the experiences in North Wales about helping parents of challenging children to develop positive parenting practices and
  • Dr. Michaela Swales also from Bangor University talked about her experience of implementing DBT in healthcare settings.

The NWW branch would like to thank all the speakers and the people who attended. They made it a memorable day.
